Some of the Best Wildlife Friendly Shrubs

Aucuba japonica: Berried evergreen shrub. Birds and beneficial insects.
Berberis: All berry producing types. One of the best is Berberis aggregata, a haven for birds.
Buddleja davidi: All types are excellent, but Buddleja "White Cloudseems" to be a particular favourite with bees, butterfies and small birds.
Caryopteris: A valuable source of autumn nectar for butterflies and bees.
Cortaderia: Pampas grass is not strictly a shrub, but birds love the seeds.
Cotoneaser: All sorts attract polinating insects in May and all the red berried forms attract birds in autumn.
Ceanothus: Depending on which type you choose the Californian lilac attracts polinating insects in spring or autumn.
Cytisus: Try Cytisus praecox to encourage bees.
Daphne: An excellent source of nectar for early insects and the berries feed the birds.
Fuchsia: Single flowered varieties such as "Mrs Popple" attract bees and birds.
Hebe: Try "Midsummer Beauty" or "Autumn Glory" for birds and bees.
Ilex: Try J C Van Tol an excellent self-fertile holly.
Lavendula: All types attract butterflies and other pollinating insects.
Leycesteria: The pheasant berry is a most attractive shrub and will attract birds and bees.
Pernettya; Excellent for bees in summer and birds in winter.
Skimmia: Plant Skimmia reevsiana for flowers and berries.
Spartium: Spanish broom is often alive with bees in summer.
Spiraea: Highly attracive to bees.
Rosmarinus: Highly attracive to bees.
