Old Fashioned Herbaceous Perennials

The herbaceous Cottage-Type plants I chose were authentic types from the 18th and 19th centuries and before in some cases. All are good garden plants that you could use in your own garden and have stood the test of time.

Centaurea montana: The perennial cornflower. Blue flowers June/July. 2 ft
Hemerocallis fulva "Kwanso": A fantastic,old double daylily with dusky orangeflowers July/Aug.3 ft
Dianthus "Paisley Gem": The last of the once famous "Paisley" pinks .White streaked wine, clove scented flowers during July.1 ft
Armeria maritima "Splendens" The red form of Sea-Pink or thrift. 6" tall. June/July.
Saxifraga muscosa: The old cottage garden Mossy Saxifrage. 6" tall April/May.
Polemonium caeruleum: Jacobs Ladder Mid- blue flowers. 2 ft. June/July.
Hosta undulata: Known as Funkia in olden times. Lilac flowers July/Aug. 1 ft
Campanula carpatica "Alba": Much used as an edging plant. White flowers. June/July 4"
Campanula glomerata: Dark blue clusters of bellshaped flowers on 1 ft stems. June/July
Campanula persicifolia:The Peach Leaved Campanula. Blue cup shaped flowers June/Aug 3 ft. Aconitum napellus: The Monkshood. Deep purple-blue hooded flowers.Aug/Sept. 4 ft.
Geranium macrorrhizum : The Cranesbill. Pink flowers and aromatic foliage.May/June 1 ft
Stachys lanata: Lamb`s Ears Grey, wooly foliage with insignificant flowers. 1 ft.
Viola "Bullion": Yellow flowers April/Sept. 9"
Viola "Maggie Mott": Silvery Mauve with a creamy yellow centre. April/Sept. 9"
Viola "Mrs Chichester": White flowers streaked violet. April/Sept. 9"
Viola "Jackanapes": Top petals deep red, lower petals ,dark yellow . April/Sept. 9"
Veronica gentanoides "Pallida"Pale blue flowers. May/June 1 ft .
Heuchera sanguinium: Coral Bells. Masses of bright scarlet, minute bells all summer .18"
Aquilegia vulgaris: The Columbine. Deep purple/blue flowers May/July.
Convallaria majalis: Lily Of The Valley. Small, white bells during May. 8"
Alchemilla mollis: Ladies Mantle. Attractive foliage and lime-green flowers. June/July. 18"
Erysimum "Bowles Mauve" The perennial wallflower.Lilac flowers. April/July. 2 ft.
Lupinus polyphyllus : Blue flowers June and September. 4 ft.
Monarda didyma: Bergamot. Scarlet flowers , aromatic foliage. July/Aug. 3 ft
Geum borisii : Bright orange blooms May/June 18"
Mecanopsis cambrica: The Welsh Poppy. Small, yellow blooms May/June 9"
Papaver orientale "Perry`s White":The Oriental Poppy. Huge white flowers May/June 3 ft
Paeonia lactiflora "Duchess de Nemours": The Peony Rose. Double white flowers, June/July. 3ft.
Nepeta racemosa: Catmint. Blue flowers over aromatic grey foliage.June/Aug 18"
Phlox paniculata: Large clusters of scented pink blooms. July/Sept. 3ft
Potentilla "Gibson`s Scarlet": The Cinquefoil. Bright red flowers May/Sept. 1 ft
