September 28, 2001, Newsletter Issue #44: Exquisite Pink Daffodils and Narcissi.

Tip of the Week

It may surprise you to learn that large flowered daffodils and narcissi are relatively modern inventions, being less than 100 years old.
During the last century the plant breeders have really "gone to town" with the humble Lent Lily, introducing many hundreds of named narcissi.
None are more exquisite than the pink trumpet types.
They are no more difficult to grow than any other large-flowered Narcissi, but in some cases are a little more expensive.

The bulbs are best planted in informal groups 8" deep any time now.
Here are my personal recommendations for reliable types.

"Mrs. R. O. Backhouse": Glistening white perianth,(Petals) and a narrow apricot trumpet that fades to pale pink.15"
"Salome": Lovely rounded milky perianth and pale pink trumpet.15"
"Petit Four": White perianth with double pink trumpet. 15"
"Romance": Ivory perianth with a frilly broad bright pink cup. 16"
"Passionale": White perianth old rose slightly frilled cup. 18"
"Bellsong": Beautiful multi-headed jonquil. Cream perianth with a rose cup. 15"
