Annual Patio Plants For Shady Tubs
************************************
Begonia semperflorens:
The ever-popular, everblooming fibrous rooted Begonias put on a bold display in the shade. Avoid the deep red sorts and those with bronze leaves as shade tends to make them seem dull. Instead, choose pale pink or white types that positively glow amongst the gloom. Look out for Olympia Rose and Victory Green-leaf white.
Begonia Non-Stop:
The large flowered double Begonias are very fleshy plants that scorch easily in the sun. They thrive in the shade and bloom for many months.
Non-Stops come in a wide range of jewel-like colours from shades of white through to crimson.
Particularly beautiful are Non-Stop Apricot, Non-Stop Salmon
and Non-Stop Yellow. A newcomer to look out for this year is
Begonia Non-Stop Rose Picotee which has exquisite white edged rose-pink blooms.
Impatiens.
Impatiens sultanii hybrids such as the Accent type make first class container plants for shady areas. The colour range extends from white through all shades of pink and lilac, purple orange apricot.
The pastel colours stand out in shady areas. Starred and picoteed sorts: strong base colours with a white star or edge are particularly exotic looking.
Look out also for Impatiens "Mosaic mixed": beautiful base colours overlaid with white markings.
Nicotiana
The flowering tobaccos appreciate the shade. Try the very imposive Nicotiana "Only The Lonely" in a large container.
The 5 ft plants have drooping white flowers and are deliciously scented.
